Schedule Back-to-School Immunizations Now!

Don’t wait for the August-September rush; make the wise choice and schedule your student’s vaccinations in July.
It’s the Perfect Time
As summer activities continue, the start of the new school year may feel distant. However, when it comes to your child’s health, July is the perfect time to get a jump on back-to-school immunizations.
Why Vaccinations Matter for School-Aged Children
Vaccines are among the most effective tools for protecting children and teens against contagious diseases. According to the World Health Organization, vaccines prevent approximately 2–3 million deaths annually. When children are vaccinated, they’re better equipped to stay healthy at school, at home, and in the community.
Vaccines help:
- Lower your child’s risk of serious illness.
- Protect classmates, teachers, and family members.
- Reduce time lost to illness, doctor visits, and school absences.
- Prevent the spread of diseases in schools and public settings.
Why is July the Best Time for Back-to-School Vaccinations?
Many parents wait until late July or August to schedule school vaccinations, then find busy clinics with limited appointments. Here's why taking care of immunizations in July is a wise move:
Avoid long waits: Clinics get crowded closer to the first day of school. Early scheduling means shorter wait times and more flexibility.
Ensure full protection: Some vaccines take days or weeks to build immunity. Early vaccination gives your child’s body time to respond.
Get follow-up time: A second dose or paperwork follow-up may be required. July appointments give you sufficient time to plan around your summer schedule.
Enjoy a stress-free summer: You’ll cross one major item off your to-do list before vacations and school supply shopping begin.
What Vaccines Are Required for Illinois Students?
Illinois state law requires specific immunizations based on your child’s grade and age. Required vaccines include:
- DTaP/Tdap – Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis
- MMR – Measles, mumps, and rubella
- Polio
- Hepatitis B
- Varicella – Chickenpox
- Meningococcal – Especially for older students entering 6th or 12th grade
Students typically require immunizations when they enter grades K, 6, and 12. Check with your child’s healthcare provider or the Moultrie County Health Department (MCHD) to review which vaccines your student may need.
What About Exemptions?
Some families may qualify for exemptions:
- Medical exemptions require documentation from a healthcare provider.
- Religious exemptions must be submitted using the Illinois Certificate of Religious Exemption, signed by both a parent and a healthcare provider.
If you’re considering an exemption, it’s essential to work with your school before the start of each academic year. This will ensure all necessary paperwork is filed correctly.
Financial Help is Available
Worried about cost? Most insurance plans cover childhood vaccines. The MCHD also participates in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program. VFC provides no-cost vaccines to eligible children, including those who are uninsured or enrolled in Medicaid.
Discounts for personal payment options are also available at the time of service.
