Why Childhood Vaccination Rates Matter

Illinois families maintain healthy vaccine protection for their school-age kids.
Parents want their children to stay healthy, in school, and ready to learn. One of the most effective ways to protect them and our communities is through routine childhood vaccinations.
A recent update from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) shows encouraging news: Most Illinois children are up to date on their required school vaccinations. In fact, nearly all reported immunization rates met or exceeded the state’s 95% coverage goal.
“Across Illinois, families, schools, and public health partners are working together to keep children protected from preventable illnesses,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra.
Why the 95% Goal Matters
That 95% benchmark is not random. It helps create what public health experts call “community protection.” As a community’s vaccination rate increases, it becomes much harder for preventable illnesses to spread.
For example, measles vaccination rates are especially high, which helps explain why Illinois continues to see relatively low case numbers, even as cases rise in other parts of the country.
This protection is especially important for:
- Infants
- Individuals with weakened immune systems
- Those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons
- Senior adults
In simple terms, vaccines help protect everyone—not just the person receiving them.
A Closer Look at Local Impact
While statewide numbers are strong, they don’t tell the whole story. Some counties and individual schools fall below the 95% mark. That is why local efforts matter.
If you have school-aged children, now is a great time to:
- Check their immunization records.
- Schedule an appointment for any needed vaccines this summer before the school year begins.
- Consult a trusted medical professional if you are unsure about vaccine timing or safety.
A Healthier Community Starts with Us
Strong vaccination rates across Illinois show what is possible when families, schools, and health providers work together. But maintaining that progress requires continued effort—especially at the local level.
At the Moultrie County Health Department, we work to:
- Provide accurate, science-based vaccine information.
- Offer convenient and affordable immunization services.
- Partner with schools, area healthcare providers, and families to help keep children protected from vaccine-preventable illnesses.
By keeping your child up to date on vaccinations, you are not only protecting your family but also helping protect our schools and the communities they serve.
